Puffy Fish Balls?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Hiya everyone,

Without having someone around to cook for you, you either end up ordering takeout or cooking it yourself. So, I had a pack of fish balls. I love those. I did not want to just boil them because that would be boring and there’d be no point to this entry. So, my sister and I found a pack of tempura batter that was on the shelf. We decided to make “fish balls tempura”.

This was our first time, making something like this and we did not know how it would come out or taste. But, that is why cooking is fun (most of the time) because you can absolutely creative about it.

Unfortunately, I ended up doing all the work because my sister insists I learn to cook on my own and the only way I would learn is by doing it myself. (I am sure she was just too lazy to do it.)

So, I mixed the batter with the fish balls and fried them onto the pan. (Since I am not exactly teaching how to make them I don’t think going into detail about it would be interesting.)

I left it alone for some time and when I got back to it, those little balls expanded. I am not really sure why. But, then as I left there longer, I heard popping sounds. The tempura would pop exposing the fish ball. I was pretty surprised and hoped that I was not going to burn down the apartment.

I quickly gathered them out of the pan and placed them onto the plate. They were puffy?

I left them to cool down on the plate. When I came back, they were not as big as before. They deflated? Perhaps there was just air in them? Well, whatever the case, they tasted so good though. I am definitely going to make these again.

Random thought of the day: I am in love with this Korean song, Wheesung’s Insomnia.

Little Cakes in a Cup

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Hiya everyone,

Before I start with my blog entry, I want to shamelessly advertise my new domain (that has yet to be a purpose for the online world), Yoite.ORG! (I told you it was something related to my obsession, Nabari no Ou cough.) I always wanted a .ORG domain to be honest.

I forgot what day but my sister wanted to bake cupcakes because we had the ingredients and were bored. So, we wanted to make something different and special. We had individual hershey kisses around so we decided to put that in with the cupcake mix. I unwrapped about 10 hershey kisses and microwaved them for about 30 seconds, but there were still some chunks, as in they were not all melted. We thought it would be okay because we assumed that we would be able to crush it with the whisk in the mixing bowl.

But, it did not come out as planned. The chunks would not break. So, we tried it again (for the same mix). This time we microwaved the hershey kisses longer (for about a minute and fifteen seconds). It came out melted and we mixed it in the bowl. Then we poured them into the individual cups and we could see the unbroken chunks of hershey kisses. D:

Finally, the cupcakes were in the oven and baking. After that, we put them in the fridge for cooling. After a while, we took them out. I decorated them with dark chocolate frosting and vanilla frosting. Please note I suck at decorating these so they’re all ugly looking but the frosting taste so good. xD

If you can see, I tried to make one of the cupcakes have a ying yang kind of symbol – the second one from the left of the second row of the first picture. I also covered one with dark chocolate frosting and put a “drop” of vanilla frosting on the top.

Don’t let the looks decieve you because the taste was actually pretty good. I didn’t really taste the hershey kisses. But, I sure saw them:

And, of course, we had some reject ones where we had problems. The middle was very soft. The top was too big that it came off when we tried to get it.

Overall, it was really fun to do. I am not much a baker (I am sure these pictures already told you that). But, it was really entertaining. You could really be creative with baking / cooking. Hopefully, we will try again and make them better.

Thanks for the awesome comments: Jenovi, Cat, and Tammy!
